Apex Down Lab

Goose down warmth, measured by loft physics.

Premium goose down works because thousands of three-dimensional clusters expand into low-density air chambers. Fill Power measures that expansion in cubic inches per ounce: 750FP down creates about 750 cubic inches of loft from one ounce of material, while 500FP creates about 500 cubic inches under the same logic.

The Material Science

Why goose down insulates with less mass than dense fills.

Goose down is a three-dimensional cluster, not a flat fiber. Its fine barbs branch outward from a central growth point and create trapped still-air pockets. Because still air conducts heat poorly, the performance comes from air volume held inside the cluster structure, not from heavy material density. That is why Fill Power is expressed as volume per ounce.

1
Fill Power = cubic inches per ounce750FP means one ounce of down expands to about 750 cubic inches of loft. Compared with 500FP, that is 250 extra cubic inches per ounce, or about 50% more loft volume at the same mass.
2
Warmth comes from trapped air, not heavy bulkDown clusters create many small air chambers. These chambers slow conductive and convective heat loss while keeping the bedding lighter than dense wool, foam, or low-grade synthetic fill.
3
Down ratio controls softness vs structureHigher down percentages mean more soft clusters and fewer stiff feather shafts. Feather-rich blends feel more resilient and supportive; high-down blends feel lighter, softer, and more cloud-like.

Material metrics that actually mean something.

These numbers describe goose down as a material. Product-specific values stay inside the product cards below.

750

750 cu in / oz Loft

Fill Power is a volume test. 750FP down expands to roughly 750 cubic inches from one ounce, indicating high loft efficiency and lower bulk for the same insulation architecture.

High Expansion Efficiency
+50%

More Volume Than 500FP

At equal mass, 750FP creates about 50% more loft volume than 500FP. That extra volume gives more air-trapping space without adding the same amount of material weight.

Cluster Air Pocket Geometry

Down clusters branch in multiple directions, creating still-air pockets. That structure is why down can feel warm without the dense pressure profile of wool, foam, or flat fiber fills.

Micro Air Chambers
95%

High Down Ratio Feel

A 95% down composition means fewer rigid feather shafts and more soft clusters. The result is a lower-pressure, more compressible, more cloud-like hand feel.

What Customers Say

Measured loft changes how bedding feels.

★★★★★

Warm without feeling heavy

The comforter feels lighter than my old winter duvet but keeps heat much more evenly distributed. No cold spots near the edges after the first week.

The pillow has real structure

I wanted something softer than foam but not completely flat. The gusseted pillow keeps the neck area supported and the feather/down blend gives it a stable feel.

Soft, but not collapsed

The high-down pillow has the cloud feel I wanted, but it still rebounds after use. The loft range was the detail that made me choose it.

FAQ

Goose down buying questions

Is 750 Fill Power automatically warmer?
Not by itself. 750FP means one ounce creates about 750 cubic inches of loft. Final warmth also depends on fill weight, chamber design, shell fabric, room temperature, and sleeper preference.
What is the difference between down and feathers?
Down is a soft three-dimensional cluster without a stiff central quill. Feathers include a shaft, so they add more structure and resilience but usually feel less cloud-like than high-ratio down.
Why does baffle box or chamber construction matter?
Down performs best when it can expand and stay distributed. Baffle boxes and chambered stitching reduce fill migration, clumping, and empty cold zones.
Why does shell fabric matter?
Down clusters and feather fibers are fine. A tighter down-proof cotton shell helps keep the fill inside while still allowing breathability and moisture vapor movement.
