Silk

A smooth protein fiber, measured in momme.

Mulberry silk for the surfaces your skin and hair touch all night: pillowcases, sleep masks, sheets and full bedding sets. Below is a short guide to momme weights and how to care for silk.

The Science

Why silk feels different

Silk is a continuous natural protein filament rather than a short spun fiber. Woven into fabric it gives a very smooth surface that creates less drag on hair and skin than rougher, short-staple fabrics, while still breathing well.

1
Continuous filament Fewer fiber ends at the surface means a smoother, lower-friction feel.
2
Momme is the weight Momme measures silk density. One momme is about 4.34 grams per square meter, so a higher number means more silk in the same area.
3
A delicate protein fiber Bleach, alkaline detergents and high heat weaken silk, which is why gentle care matters.

Common Questions

What people ask about silk

What does momme mean?
Momme is the density standard for silk. One momme equals about 4.34 grams per square meter. A 19 momme silk is lighter and airy; 22 momme has more silk per area for a denser, more durable feel.
Is silk better for hair and skin?
Silk is valued because its continuous filament surface creates less mechanical drag than rougher short-staple fabrics. That can reduce friction against hair and delicate facial skin during sleep.
Why is mulberry silk more expensive?
Mulberry silk uses fine, continuous filament and needs careful reeling, weaving, dyeing and finishing. Higher momme fabrics use more silk and are handled more slowly, which adds to the cost.
How should silk be washed?
Wash cold or at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a pH-neutral silk detergent. Avoid bleach, alkaline detergents, high heat, rough spin cycles and drying in direct sun, all of which can weaken the fiber and dull its luster.
