The Science

What makes one cotton feel better than another

Cotton quality starts with fiber length. Longer fibers can be spun into finer, stronger yarns with fewer exposed ends, which gives a smoother surface and less pilling. The weave then decides the feel: sateen is silkier and a little warmer, percale is crisp and cool.

What people ask about cotton bedding

Does a higher thread count always mean better sheets?
No. Thread count matters only when the cotton fiber, yarn quality, weave and finishing are also good. A lower-count sheet made from long-staple cotton can outperform a higher-count sheet made from poor fiber.
Why does Egyptian cotton feel smoother?
Extra-long staple fibers can be spun into smoother yarns with fewer exposed short ends. Combined with a sateen weave, more continuous yarn surface touches the skin, which reduces friction.
Is Turkish cotton warmer or cooler than Egyptian cotton?
Turkish cotton is usually the more breathable and faster-drying of the two, while Egyptian cotton sateen tends to feel denser. For blankets and throws, Turkish cotton suits season-flexible coverage rather than maximum warmth.
Is sateen hotter than percale?
